Birch bark is light, soft, and smooth on the surface, making it an ideal material for painting, such as the Cheonmado (Heavenly Horse painting). However, it is vulnerable to moisture and easily worn by friction when used over long periods. These physical limitations suggest that birch bark is better suited for ritual, funerary, or symbolic purposes rather than practical use.
In contrast, bamboo has long fibers and excellent elasticity, allowing it to retain structural strength even when split into thin strips. When woven, it maintains curved surfaces effectively, making it durable enough for actual horseback use.
In this sense, while the birch bark mal-darae emphasizes visual display, the bamboo mal-darae can be understood as one designed for practical use.
Moreover, attaching gilt-bronze plates and fixing them with bronze nails requires a certain degree of tensile strength. Birch bark tears easily, and its structure is prone to deformation when weight becomes unevenly distributed. Bamboo, on the other hand, can securely hold nails, and its woven structure disperses impact efficiently. This makes bamboo an optimal material for combining organic components with metal fittings.
The white surface of birch bark carries symbolic meanings of purification, the afterlife, and transition, making it an ideal ground for painting. It also represents the boundary between the “visible world” and the “world after death.”
Bamboo, being hollow inside, symbolizes a passage or medium. Because it bends without breaking, it signifies resilience and continuity. These qualities resonate with its long-standing symbolic associations in East Asia with integrity, vitality, and endurance.
The mal-darae from Cheonmachong can be classified into three types:
1. Birch bark (baekhwa supije):
Focused on pictorial expression, with strong symbolic and ritual characteristics — that which is seen.
2. Bamboo with gilt-bronze ornamentation:
Structurally oriented, expressing authority and hierarchy — that which shines.
3. Lacquered wood:
Produced for practical, protective, and decorative purposes — that which endures.
These three types are not substitutes for one another; rather, they reflect a clear division of roles.
If the birch bark mal-darae functioned as the surface upon which the Heavenly Horse was depicted, the bamboo mal-darae served as the body that physically supported the Heavenly Horse.
As for the lacquered mal-darae, references appear in the 1973 excavation report, but its physical remains are poorly preserved. Severe deterioration of the lacquered wooden material has left no extant objects suitable for public display, making further detailed measurement and analysis difficult. As a result, academic papers or specialized studies on this type are extremely limited.
Although lacquered artifacts with a defined form like the mal-darae are rare, lacquer production and use were highly developed throughout the Silla period, and a wide variety of lacquerware has been excavated.
