There is a die-hard foreign fan who attends all of Lotte’s more than 130 home and away games every year without missing a single one. Kerry Maher, originally from Georgia in the United States and the son of a Korean War veteran, first came to Korea as a native English teacher at Ulsan Seobu Elementary School. In 2011, he became a professor in the Department of English at Youngsan University, and after following his students to Sajik Stadium, he fell in love with Busan Galmaegi and practically began living at the ballpark, even giving up the idea of returning to the U.S.
When he reached mandatory retirement age in August 2019, the expiration of his work visa meant he would have to say a regrettable farewell to his fellow baseball fans. Hearing this, the Lotte Giants specially hired him as a team employee, assigning him to care for the club’s foreign players. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when games were held without spectators, Kerry Maher was the only person in the world who continued to sit in the stands at Sajik Stadium and watch every game.
He once said, “If Major League Baseball in the U.S. is opera, Korean professional baseball is rock ’n’ roll,” and “Busan Galmaegi is my first love and my family.”
The baseball legend born in Busan is pitcher Choi Dong-won.
In 1991, he ran for a seat on the Busan City Council under the slogan “A new fastball of politics for a healthier society.” Known as the “Iron Arm,” Choi led the Lotte Giants to a championship in the 1984 Korean Series with an astonishing four wins and one loss by himself. In 1988, he spearheaded the formation of the Korean Professional Baseball Players’ Association in line with rising demands for democratization. He was supported by former President Roh Moo-hyun, a member of the Democratic Party who opposed Kim Young-sam’s three-party merger. It seems Busan citizens—who are famously decisive—thought that a beloved baseball hero was being tainted by politics.
At the entrance to the main grandstand of Sajik Stadium stands a statue of Choi Dong-won, whose blazing fastballs and competitive spirit brought home the championship—likely the first statue ever erected for a Korean baseball player. His uniform number, 11, has of course been permanently retired. In elementary and middle school, he wore number 1 to signify “ace,” but after learning that baseball is not a solo sport but a game of teamwork, he switched to number 11 in high school. Director Jo Eun-sung even chose November 11 as the release date for his 2021 film 1984 Choi Dong-won.
Busan is also inseparable from table tennis. Two of Korea’s four Olympic gold medalists in table tennis—Hyun Jung-hwa and Yoo Nam-kyu—are from Busan. Hyun Jung-hwa, head coach of the Korea Racing Authority table tennis team, is a legend who achieved a career Grand Slam by winning every major world championship title. Yoo Nam-kyu, head coach of the Samsung Life team, is the first-ever Olympic gold medalist in table tennis, winning the title in the year the sport made its Olympic debut, and remains a legend in Korean men’s table tennis.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first table tennis competition in Korea—the “Ping-Pong Tournament,” hosted by the Kyungsung Daily Newspaper on January 1, 1924—Busan hosted the World Table Tennis Championships from February 16 to 25, 2024, at BEXCO in Haeundae. This event also led to the founding of a new professional corporate team, the Korea Exchange Table Tennis Team, based in Busan.
