The Secret of “Cigarette-Butt Coffee”
The year 1976 was the height of the notorious cigarette-butt coffee scandal. On May 29, 1976, newspapers and broadcasters reported shocking news: “Coffee Mass-Produced with Mixed Tobacco Powder.” Rumors began circulating that some cafés in Seoul were adding tobacco powder to coffee to increase volume. The Seoul District Prosecutors’ Office launched an investigation and arrested two individuals—18-year-old Park from Jang-An Coffee House in Jongno, and 23-year-old Kim from Yuri Coffee House in Jung-gu—on charges of violating the Food Sanitation Act. They also apprehended Son (28) of Donggung Coffee House in Jongno 6-ga and Lee (33), the head cook at GwiBuin Coffee House in Jung-gu, for questioning. These details were reported in the daily papers.
According to prosecutors, Park of Jang-An Coffee House used to produce 250 to 300 cups of coffee from just one pound of coffee—normally enough for about 100 cups—by mixing in tobacco powder and salt, selling about 600 cups a day. Kim of Yuri Coffee House reportedly sold more than 700 cups. Their method was to buy 4 pounds of coffee, mix 2 pounds of tobacco powder into 2 pounds of coffee to make it look like 4 pounds, and then siphon off the remaining untouched coffee for personal gain.
They collected cigarette butts left by customers, dried them on a briquette stove, ground them into powder, and mixed the powder into the coffee. To mask the nicotine flavor, they sometimes added crushed eggshells and salt, and often served the adulterated coffee late in the afternoon when customers’ taste sensitivity diminished.
Rumors about cigarette-butt coffee had been circulating since the year before, but most people brushed them off, thinking, “No way—that can’t be true.”
Once prosecutors received credible information, they collected coffee samples from 15 cafés across Seoul and requested analysis by the Seoul Health Research Institute and the Technical Research Center of the Korea Tobacco & Ginseng Corporation. Four cafés were found to have nicotine and tobacco residue in their coffee, leading to a full-scale investigation.
The scandal filled newspapers and airwaves daily, and soon new terms such as nicotine coffee and killer coffee appeared.
The mid-1970s saw a wave of adulterated and poor-quality foods, with cigarette-butt coffee being just one example. The root cause was the era’s crushing inflation. Wages remained stagnant while the cost of living soared rapidly, creating a sense of threat and desperation for ordinary people.
Later that same year, in December 1976—when the public uproar over cigarette-butt coffee was still fresh—pharmacist Jo Hang-yeon of Dongseo Foods developed an instant mix coffee that hikers and anglers could enjoy easily. At first, it failed to draw much attention because the nation was consumed by the coffee scandal. But from 1977 onward, it began to gain market traction.
Originally rectangular in shape, the product switched to the now-familiar stick format in 2006.
Today, Korean mix coffee is one of the most popular Korean beverages among foreign visitors and ranks as the No. 1 preferred Korean souvenir.
