In 1968, Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia—the homeland of coffee—visited Korea. To commemorate Ethiopia’s participation in the Korean War, he bestowed the name “Ethiopia Bet” on a café newly opened in Chuncheon and even sent green coffee beans through diplomatic channels. This marked the birth of Korea’s very first roastery café.
In September 1970, Dongseo Foods established a joint-venture factory with General Foods of the United States and began selling coffee. Dongseo Foods held 66.5% of the shares, while General Foods held 33.5%. The company president was Korean, but three of the executives—vice president, director, and plant manager—were foreigners. Surprisingly, none of them were Americans; they were Japanese dispatched from General Foods’ Japan branch. General Foods’ intention in building a coffee plant in Korea was to target the Chinese market. However, even massive American capital could not change China’s deeply rooted tea culture, and so the company shifted its focus to domestic sales instead. They stipulated in the contract that a fixed percentage of sales revenue must be spent on advertising, and even the choice of newspapers for ad placements was decided by the Japanese executives.
At the time, coffee consumption was led by Sweden with an annual average of 1,115 cups per person, followed by the United States with 789 cups, while Korea consumed only 26 cups per person.
In 1972, coffee sets appeared as official gifts during the North–South Red Cross talks. At the main meeting held in Pyongyang on August 29, the South brought four coffee sets as gifts; at the Seoul meeting on September 12, the North also included four coffee sets in their gift offering.
In cafés and entertainment establishments, regular brewed coffee accounted for 90% of consumption. Only about 10% drank instant coffee, but as Miju Foods emerged following Dongseo Foods, Koreans gradually shifted from brewing coffee to simply mixing it. In American fashion, convenience began to take priority over taste.
In 1971, the first Starbucks store opened in Seattle. On April 6 of the same year, at the World Table Tennis Championships in Nagoya, the U.S. team accepted an invitation to visit the People’s Republic of China from April 10 to 17, where they met Zhou Enlai. In July that year, Henry Kissinger—known as a coffee enthusiast—visited China, followed by President Richard Nixon the next February.
In 1972, Korea hosted an unusual exhibition called the “Prototype Exhibition.” It showcased domestic companies that had successfully imitated the world’s finest products—essentially a display of “counterfeit” goods. A total of 1,146 world-class products were displayed alongside 1,205 Korean-made imitations for comparison. The government’s purpose in hosting this exhibition was to encourage the direct imitation of world-leading products as a way to elevate domestic technological standards and upgrade export goods. The Presidential Award went to Milyang Ceramics, which copied West Germany’s Thierscheroid porcelain.
On November 24, 1972, The Kyunghyang Shinmun introduced a recipe for brewing coffee: “1 part coffee, 2 parts sugar, 1 part milk.” It was a distinctly Korean, sweet-style coffee recipe. With the growing popularity of instant coffee, vending machines began to appear around this time. On February 8, 1973, a coffee vending machine installed at Seoul City Hall’s Citizens Hall sold a cup of coffee for 30 won.

My favorite sweet, creamy Korean-style coffee
