한국인 성씨 Family names in Korea

1. 해방초기 서울대학교 총장을 지낸 분 중의 한 분은 그의 부친이 노비 신분이었다고 한다. 그분 자신은 인격이 고결해서 굳이 그 사실을 숨기지 않았다. 그분이 세상을 떠난 뒤 자제분이 부친의 전기를 출간했는데 거기에 양반출신으로 기록되어 있다 한다.

 

2. 정씨 성을 가진 여자와 김씨 성을 가진 남자가 결혼을 하려고 했다.

그런데 정씨 성을 가진 여자쪽 할아버지가 김씨 성을 가진 남자와의 결혼을 결사 반대 했다.

여자 쪽 집안 선조가 저쪽 김씨 집안 선조로부터 참살당한 고려시대 기록이 있으니, 절대 결혼 할수 없다고 했다 한다. 젊은 남자는 당황했지만 일단 결혼을 하고 봐야 할것 같아서 선조분 일은 죄송하다 했다.

그러자 이번에는 남자쪽에서 "그런 노망난 영감탱이 ~~~"

연인들이 원형 탈모증이 올 정도가 됐다.

이를 보다 못한 남자쪽 할아버지가 " 사실 내 아버지는 조선 말에 양반집 김씨의 노비였단다. 성도 없었지. 갑오경장 을 계기로 노비들이 호적 신고를 할 수 있게 되자 갑자기 성을 만들어야 했어. 그저 주인집 성씨를 따르다보니 우리 집안이 그만 김씨가 되고 말았어. 우리 집안 족보가 새것인데는 이유가 있단다. 사실 그간 엉뚱한 집안 제사를 지내온 거야...

할아버지의 고백을 듣고 그 남자는 기쁜 나머지 여자친구 집안에 즉시 그 사실을 알린다.

" 우리 집안은 사실 김씨가 아니었고 김씨 집안 노비 였습니다! "

그 말을 들은 여자 쪽 할아버지는 결혼을 허락하기는 커녕 어떻게 근본 없는 자식과 결혼하느냐며 다시 화를 냈고, 젊은이의 원형탈모는 나을 줄 몰랐다.

 

One of the presidents of Seoul National University in the early years after Korea’s liberation was said to have had a father who had been born a slave. The man himself was known for his integrity and never felt the need to hide that fact. After he passed away, however, one of his children published a biography describing the family as being of yangban aristocratic lineage.

A woman with the surname Jeong and a man with the surname Kim were planning to get married.
But the woman’s grandfather strongly opposed the marriage. He claimed that there were records from the Goryeo Dynasty stating that one of their Jeong ancestors had been brutally killed by an ancestor of the Kim family, and therefore the marriage could never be allowed.

The young man was bewildered, but since he still wanted to marry her, he awkwardly apologized for what his ancestors had supposedly done.

At that point, someone from the man’s side exploded, saying, “That senile old man…”

The stress became so severe that the young couple started suffering from circular bald patches from anxiety.

Unable to watch this any longer, the man’s grandfather finally confessed:

“To tell the truth, my father was actually a slave serving a yangban Kim family in the late Joseon Dynasty. We originally had no surname at all. After the Gabo Reform, slaves were finally allowed to register themselves in family records, and suddenly we had to choose a surname. We simply adopted the surname of our masters, so our family became ‘Kim.’ That’s why our genealogy book is relatively new. In truth, we’ve been performing memorial rites for the wrong ancestors all this time…”

Overjoyed, the young man immediately ran to tell his girlfriend’s family:

“Our family isn’t actually part of that Kim clan at all! We were just servants of a Kim family!”

But instead of approving the marriage, the woman’s grandfather became even angrier, shouting, “How could you marry someone of such lowly origins?”

And so, the young man’s bald patches showed no sign of healing.

한국에는 이런 성씨가 300여개 있다 한다. It is said that there are around 300 such family names in Korea.
