Korea climate and topography

1) Korea is located at the far eastern end of Eurasia. Its climate is more continental than oceanic. This produces hotter summers and colder winters than other countries on the same latitude. Although there are four distinct seasons, summer and winter are longer than spring and fall. The coldest month is January. The average temperature range is -7 to 6 degrees Celsius. The hottest month is August, with an average temperature range of 19to 26 degrees Celsius. Korea`s annual precipitation is 1000 to 1800 mm. The country experiences over 60 percent of its annual precipitaion from June to September. The monsoon season in Korea, called 장마철, usually starts the last week of June and lasts for about a month.

2) The best seasons to visit Korea are spring(late April to early May) and fall (late September to early October). Two outdoor activities of note in Korea are taking in the annual cherry blossoms that line downtown parks in April and watching the leaves change colors in the mountains in October.

3) Topography
Korea`s many hills and mountains are topographical feature. In Korea, hills with an average elevation of 100m above sea level are called mountains. In the early 20th century, a foreign missionary described Korea`s topography as neither highlands nor flatlands. Although 70% of the country is mountainous, the average is relatively speaking, not very high. In south Korea, Mountains with an average elevation of 2000m or more are all located in North Korea, marking up just 0.4% of Korea`s land mass. The average elevation of Korea is 482m, much lower than the average elevation of Asia, which is 960m.

4) Korea ha no active volcanoes today, but there were volcanic activities during the Cenozoic Era. Jejudo Island is the main volcanic area in Korea. The island was formed by volcanic activity below the sea, and the island rose higher with each eruption. Jejudo island is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Korea.
