From the middle of the 7th century until the establishment of two separate governments in 1948, the Korean peninsula had been ruled as a single country. The start of the Korean War in 1950 and the armistice agreement in 1953 basically cut the peninsula in half. The division remains in place to this day. In an atmosphere alternating between tension and reconciliation, continuous efforts have been made toward unification. The MDL officially separates North and South Korea, which means that there is no way to cross the border by land. To leave the country, people must travel by air or sea.
Korea`s present-day territory was established in the 15th century.
Seoul was designated as the capital in 1394 and remains the capital to this day. By 2010, the total population of Korea was 48.58million and approximately 10million people, or one-fifth of the entire population, live in Seoul. However about 13million people work in Seoul. The land mass of Seoul is 0.6% of the whole country. Seoul is close to the Military Demarcation Line. By car, it takes an hour to get to Kaesong, which is just over the North Korean border, and two hours to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.
