Korean Buddhism belongs to the Mahāyāna (Great Vehicle) tradition. The Nahan (Arhat, 阿羅漢, Arahan) is a saint of the Hīnayāna (Small Vehicle) Buddhism. The Arhat is an ideal figure in early Buddhism—one who has completely eliminated all defilements.
In Mahāyāna Buddhism, a person who practices the path of a bodhisattva eventually becomes a Buddha. However, in Hīnayāna Buddhism, the Buddha is considered unique and singular, and the highest spiritual attainment possible for a human being is to become an Arhat.
The path to becoming an Arhat can be classified into four stages of enlightenment known as the Four Stages of Śrāvaka (Śrota-āpanna) Attainment (Seongmun Saga,
1. Sotāpanna (예류, 豫流) – “Stream-enterer.” One who has destroyed delusions and entered the stream of truth.
2. Sakadāgāmin (일래, 一來) – “Once-returner.” After overcoming desire and ill will through practice, one will be reborn in this world only once more.
3. Anāgāmin (불환, 不還) – “Non-returner.” Although not yet completely free from all defilements, one has greatly diminished fundamental attachments such as greed, anger, and sensual desire, and thus will not return to this world again.
4. Arhat (응공, 應供) – “Worthy of offerings.” Through intense practice and realization of the Dharma, one has severed all bonds and defilements. The Arhat is worthy of veneration and offerings. In Sanskrit, the term is Arhat or Arahan. Having ended the cycle of rebirth, there is nothing further to cultivate or learn, and thus this stage is called Aśaikṣa (無學, “no more learning”). The Arhat is also referred to as Eungjin (應眞, “one who conforms to truth”) or Saljeok (殺賊, “destroyer of the inner enemies of defilement”).
